A few weeks back, We Wear Khakis biggest fan, Jared, asked us to write a post about what we like to do to unwind a bit on lunch hour. I gave it some thought and realized I never do anything to unwind on lunch. More times than not I either hit up a spinning class at a nearby gym or brown bag it at my desk.
Today, I decided to start a new tradition. One day a week I’ll tote my handy Canon DSLR to work with me and hit the streets in search of good eats! Then I’ll document the experience, give my impressions of the food and share. Hopefully my fellow Khakians will enjoy!
Today I visited Ali Baba Mediterranean Delites in downtown Atlanta near Georgia State University. Why is Delites misspelled? I have no idea!
I discovered Ali Baba one day while wondering around Broad St NW near Five Points. I was going nowhere in particular. Broad St at GA State is a great area filled with niche places to eat, Ali Baba being one of them.
Ali Baba is a neat little restaurant that is literally nothing more than a hole in the wall. The first time I saw it was in the heart of lunch hour, with a line of 25 or so patrons lined down the sidewalk waiting for a taste of their Mediterranean delights. I knew I had to eat there once I saw the line.
The obvious lunch choice is the Gyro, but once I stepped up to place my order, making a decision became tough. The cooks were serving up falafel, spanakopita, latka, samosa, baklava and a bunch of other stuff I never tried before.
I nabbed a gyro combo with a few sides and a drink and even a few Mediterranean lady fingers (sort of like round shaped baklava) for right at $10. Not too bad. I didn’t catch the lady fingers in any of my shots because they were munched up by my boss and me before I could get the camera out of the bag!
So, what’s on the menu for next week? I’m not sure yet, but I’m leaning towards this Vietnamese place I heard has devilishly spicy food.

Nice pics, sir.
And God does that look delicious!
You need to check out Nick’s Food to Go at Hill St. and MLK (not too far from 5 points) and get their gyro. Probably the best one around (even better if you add feta). They also have amazing hummus.

Thanks for the shout-out! Love post as well, for me lunch is a time to relax and rejuvenate. Because i work at a University I typically sit down and eat some leftovers and catch up on some reading utilizing the library for great magazines like Inc. or Fast Company. I also enjoy hitting the gym as well its on campus it’s free so a total win win. I think it is important to recharge during lunch so you can crush it the rest of the day. To bad that Gyro won’t ship well….
